In the Fall of 2020 I worked on a project in which I merged the colored pencil work and areas of design that are especially interesting to me, including book cover design.
I chose Murakami to work with — I am inspired by his writing on themes of space, music, and art. The three books I picked shouldn't necessarily be read together but are three of my favorite pieces.
I worked with the typeface DIN 2014, which was originally designed for signage for the German highway system. Together with highway imagery it creates a driving scene. Driving is often
a solitary activity in which your mind can wander or focus, and Murakami's characters do a lot of traveling by car. The colors and textures that colored pencil allows for create less of a realistic picture than an imaginative space, something that should reflect the magical-realist space created by Murakami in his books.
